Staying one Keystroke Ahead of Fraud

Keylogging is a growing concern for computer security specialists and regular Internet users.

Keylogging is the tracking (or logging) of any keys as they are struck on a keyboard. This is usually done in secret, so that the owner of the computer does not know his or her actions are being tracked or that their keystrokes are being monitored. As with other forms of monitoring, keylogging was originally developed for owners of public computers - such as those in large offices and libraries - to be able to track how their computers were being used. Sadly, once again, criminals and thieves have learned to adapt the technologu for their own gains.

There are several methods that an identity thief can use keylogging to gain your personal information - from hardware and software-based approaches to electromagnetic and even acoustic analysis.

Anti-keylogging software, such as the type that ID Guards offers, will make any information gained by an identity thief using keylogging programs uninteligible and, therefore, useless to them. This adds a new level of protection for your computer and your online activities as well as make you safer when using insecure Internet connections such as Wi-Fi hotspots offered by hotels, restaurants, and some transportation terminals.

Stay even better protected by keeping these tips in mind:

  • Always delete any emails on your computer or in your email program that contain any of your personal information
  • Always lock your cell phone, iPod, laptop, or other mobile electronic device when you're not using it.
  • Always turn off your desktop computer - either at work or at home - when it's not in use
