- To Your Police Department (Or other Law Enforcement Agency) - a sample letter that you can use to send notification to your local police department that you have been a victim of identity theft and detail the steps that you have taken to correct the matter, along with any other cooperative measures they may need to find the thief and bring him or her to justice. It will also help you to send copies of this letter to the police department in the city where the crime took place (if different from your own city) as well as the Fraud Department at the Secret Service and filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
